Jacksonville, North Carolina – A diverse crowd gathered on Monday to witness the swearing-in of Jarad Phelps as Jacksonville’s new police chief. The ceremony was attended by family, friends, community leaders, and law enforcement officials from both North Carolina and neighboring states.
Phelps, a Virginia native with over 28 years of law enforcement experience, most recently served as deputy chief in Prince William County, Virginia. When asked about his decision to join the Jacksonville force, he cited the promising opportunities and positive community reputation.
Holding a Master of Public Administration from George Mason University and a Bachelor of Political Science from James Madison University, Phelps is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He intends to build upon the foundation laid by Jacksonville Public Safety Director Mike Yaniero, maintaining the department’s momentum toward national accreditation and avoiding sweeping changes.
Phelps becomes the eighth police chief to serve Jacksonville since 1929. Mike Yaniero will continue in his role as Public Safety Director, overseeing both the police and fire departments.
