Wilson County, NC – A devastating multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 95 North claimed the lives of five people on Wednesday afternoon. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the scene around 1:26 p.m.
Initial reports indicate that a freightliner truck failed to slow down while traveling northbound on a section of the highway currently under construction. The truck collided with a Chevy Tahoe, then continued on, striking a Toyota Rav-4 and two tractor-trailers before coming to a stop and catching fire.
Tragically, all occupants of the Chevy Tahoe and Toyota Rav-4 perished in the crash. The victims have been identified as William Carroll Tucker, Elizabeth Sharon Tucker, both of Hephzibah, Georgia, and Edward Carroll Davis and Martha Warren Davis, from Greenville, NC, and and Linda Warren Whitehurst.
The drivers of the two tractor-trailers sustained minor injuries and were transported to Wilson Medical Center. The driver of the freightliner, 51-year-old Charles Christian Haskell of Las Vegas, was also treated for minor injuries before being arrested and charged with five counts of Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle. He was placed under a $25,000 secured bond and lodged in the Wilson County Detention Center.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the cause of the crash.
