Gambling and pot lobbyists are pumping big money into NC General Assembly

1 min read

According to a recent investigation by a campaign finance watchdog, fundraisers connected to the gambling and marijuana industries gave North Carolina lawmakers more than $500,000 over the first half of the year as the General Assembly considered proposals to expand each industry.

Bob Hall, a former executive director for Democracy North Carolina who studies campaign donations in North Carolina, says the majority of the money originated from outside the state.

In addition, Hall pointed to the $885,000 in donations from the video poker industry from a May complaint he filed with the State Board of Elections.

According to a law the General Assembly passed many years ago, any probe the elections board would conduct would happen in secrecy.
