Harnett County, NC – A kayaking trip turned into a rescue operation Monday afternoon as a local man found himself in distress on the Cape Fear River. Christopher Monroe, participating in a group outing with his church youth group, capsized his kayak near Wildlife Road in Lillington.
Emergency crews from multiple agencies, including Erwin Fire and Rescue, responded to the scene. Due to the swift current, Monroe’s companions were unable to assist and continued to their planned meeting point downstream.
Monroe was safely rescued and is recovering. Local authorities are reminding residents to prioritize safety when enjoying recreational activities on the river, emphasizing the importance of understanding river conditions and wearing a life jacket.
