NASH COUNTY, N.C. – A Nash County couple has admitted to defrauding the government of over $279,000 in COVID-19 relief funds.
Joe Jefferson faces up to 31 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to the scheme. His wife, Danyael, also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud.
According to federal prosecutors, the couple orchestrated a fraudulent operation by recruiting individuals to falsely pose as landlords for properties in the area. They then submitted fraudulent applications for emergency rental assistance through the NC HOPE loan program.
After receiving the funds, Jefferson and his accomplices divided the money among themselves.
The Jeffersons are scheduled to be sentenced later this year by U.S. District Judge James Dever II.
