Temporary closure of Cape Lookout due to Hurricane Idalia’s anticipated effects

As the state prepares for the effects of Hurricane Idalia, a portion of the eastern North Carolina shoreline will be temporarily closed to the public on Thursday.

This morning, Cape Lookout National Seashore made the announcement that all public access points would be shut down the next day.

According to officials, it is possible that the region remains off-limits to the general public through Friday, September 1, depending on the circumstances.

Two to four feet of storm surge and winds with tropical storm force are what hurricane Idalia is predicted to bring.

The National Weather Service has also warned that the storm may increase the chance of tornadoes, particularly along North Carolina’s southern coast.

According to officials, severe rip currents will be present on all of Cape Lookout’s beaches for a number of days.
