WILSON COUNTY, NC – A tornado struck Wilson County early Thursday, causing significant damage to ten homes and a local middle school. Tragically, one person lost their life.
Emergency responders from the Rock Ridge Fire Department were called to the scene of a collapsed two-story home on Lloyd Road near Lucama. While crews were able to access the second floor, the first floor was inaccessible due to the collapsed upper portion of the building.
Neighbors expressed deep concern for a man in his sixties who resided in the home. His vehicle was in the driveway, but attempts to contact him by phone were unsuccessful. Concerned residents noted that his bedroom was located on the ground floor.
A FEMA search and rescue team was deployed to the site to examine the wreckage of the home. Other damaged homes in Wilson County were inspected and cleared.
County officials confirmed that one fatality occurred as a result of the storm.
